Abstract

As we initiate a new year for TRANSFUSION, we are pleased to announce some important changes that will enhance functionality for readers and authors. We recognize that print remains popular for the readers of TRANSFUSION, but also that most of our readers require a robust digital version of its content. Therefore, we have implemented a few initiatives that should enhance our readers' experience with the digital versions of TRANSFUSION. First, Wiley's “Anywhere Article” was launched earlier this year for TRANSFUSION on Wiley online library. Readers online simply click the enhanced article option offered for all TRANSFUSION content to access an amazing new suite of features and functionality. This article version is focused on making the audience experience better: enhancing readability, functionality, and portability. Manuscript information is brought to the surface, eliminating superfluous clutter and distractions. Figures can be viewed in context or individually and easily navigated, browsed, or downloaded. The article layout and sidebar options allow readers to access important information like references at any point in the reading experience, without losing their place on the main page. Perhaps most importantly, the Anywhere Article adapts to any device—desktop, tablet, or phone—to provide the optimal reading experience however it is being viewed. For our authors, TRANSFUSION articles now carry an Altmetric (or alternative metrics) score that provides data about social media activity and discussions relating to the article from social media sources (Twitter, Facebook, blogs, etc.), the mainstream media (newspapers and magazines), and online reference managers. The Altmetric score is easily identifiable as a colorful “donut” icon on the front page of each article. Altmetrics provides data for authors to demonstrate the impact of their papers online. The service pulls in data from three main sources: social media, traditional media, and online reference managers. The score is derived from an algorithm that evaluates three main factors: volume of mentions, sources and different categories of mention, and authors—how often the author of each mention talks about the article. The Altmetrics score is not just a number—readers can click on the score to see which Twitter accounts have mentioned the article and how many followers this represents; which Facebook pages have mentioned it; which countries are “talking” about the article; and much more. We hope this information is useful to authors in addition to the more traditional impact score that evaluates the journal. These initiatives represent the first steps of many to enhance every aspect of the user experience with TRANSFUSION. We look forward to rolling out even more initiatives in 2015! As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions for other ways that we can improve your reading and writing experiences. The authors have disclosed no conflicts of interest.
