THE GENDER BASED STUDY ON THE TYPES OF SPEECH FUNCTIONS OF INSTRUCTORS IN CLASS

Abstract
A gender based study on speech functions of instructors needs the details. This study was to investigate the types of speech function made by male and female lecturers in the classroom interactions. The study was conducted by using single case study. The data of this study were the clauses of male and female lecturers in the classroom interactions which realized in mood. The data sources of this study were 5 male lecturers and 5 female lecturers who teach in the English Department in the University of Muslim Nusantara Al-Washliyah (UMN AW) Medan. The data were collected through audio recording and observation. The technique of data analysis was interactive model. The results of this study revealed that the types of speech functions of male and female lecturers in the classroom were not only four basic speech functions they are statement , question, command, offer, but also an alternative response that is acceptance or minor. The statement was more often used by male lecturer in the classroom interactions while the question was more often used by female lecturer in the classroom interactions. A new type of speech function minor (type of acceptance) was used only by female lecturers. Indonesian culture and gender are responsible for differences.
