THE EFFECTIVENESS OF DEBATE LEARNING METHOD IN STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY

The aim of this research was to determine the effectiveness of debate learning methods in students’ speaking ability of the Faculty of Engineering. This research was conducted at the Faculty of Engineering Unika De La Salle Manado, with the population of second semester students totaling 32, academic year 2014/2015. The design of the research method used was classroom action research (CAR). Each cycle consists of four stages: (1) planning, (2) action, (3) observation, (4) reflection. The data used is the observation process by using teaching methods debate. Data collection techniques used were observation and tests. Data analysis techniques used is the analysis of the description that explains the whole process and results on each cycle. The research process was carried out in three cycles. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the debate learning methods can enhance the ability to speak in the second semester students of Faculty of Engineering Unika De La Salle Manado academic year 2014/2015. This can be evidenced by the increase in scores after treatment in each cycle that includes aspects of pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension. In the first cycle of the average value reached 56,4. In cycle 2 reached 70,6 and the third cycle of the value achieved was 80,75.
