Abstract
Carrier, Damerow and Bailey’s book offers a wide-ranging perspective on digital learning, highlighting cutting-edge research and recent developments in the use of learning technologies in language education both in terms of theory and practice. In fact, one of the particular strengths of the book is how well the pedagogy and technology are orchestrated to reflect the essence of digital learning. The book is part of a series that is co-published by TIRF (The International Research Foundation for English Language Education) and Routledge. It is organized in two main parts. ‘The Research Perspective’ comprises ten chapters based on the doctoral research studies of TIRF’s grant recipients, with each chapter explaining the motivation for the research, the research question(s), the data collection and discussion, as well as the digital tools used and policy implications. This last part offers an explicit consideration of the implications for language education policy and practice as well as directions for further research. ‘The Pedagogical Perspective’ consists of nine chapters written by experts in the field of digital language learning and focuses on how the relevant theories and research can be applied to practice. All the chapters are concerned with significant current technology trends and provide useful insights into their relevance to the future of ELT.
