Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this research is to investigate the Korean teachers’ perception and needs on the instructional consultation. And this instructional consultation was not consulting on Korean teachers, but consulting on Korean language classes. This instructional consultation was not an evaluation, but exchanging opinions cooperatively. Teachers analyzed the class from the perspective of learners, and had time to reflect on the class. Methods Experienced Korean teachers who expressed their intention to participate in consulting, filled out the questionnaires and interviewed. In addition, they participated in the instructional consultation, and measured teacher efficacy. Results The results show that Korean teachers said that the overall part of the class, from class design to operation, material development and utilization, is the subject of consulting. The instructional consultation would help improve the quality of classes and the individual growth of teachers. A consultant should be a skilled expert who knows and studies Korean language education. To conduct instructional consultation systematically, the role of a consultant is important. In order to activate instructional consultation, it is necessary to get consulting easily without worrying about evaluation. Teachers who participated in instructional consultation got teacher efficacy and overall class analysis results improved. Conclusions Teachers participated said that instructional consultation was meaningful in that it was a good opportunity to grow further as a teacher as well as to improve classes.
