Abstract

Internet usage is very popular in Indonesia
\nwhich reaches 52% of the total population, but the majority of
\nthe people use the internet to chat and access social media sites,
\nnot access data either downloading or uploading important
\ninformation on the internet. Social media has two roles, as
\ncontent producers and at the same time as users. but in fact
\nalmost all social media timelines are flooded with information
\ncontaining hate speech and hoaxes. This study tries to explore
\nthe phenomenon of hoaxes and hate speech getting a big
\nmoment when social media became very common and
\ndeveloped in the internet age. The massive hoaxes circulating
\noutwit many people to trust and participate in spreading it
\neven though they have high education such as lecturers. For
\nthis reason the aim of this study is to analyze the reception of
\nnetizens among lecturers in two big cities in Indonesia namely
\nMedan and Bandung city regarding of hoaxes and hate speech
\non social media using netnography method which requires
\nresearchers to retrieve data as a whole through online search
\nand offline search. The results showed that lecturers in Medan
\nCity and Bandung City were still trapped in the activities of
\nproducing and reproducing hoax and hate speech content
\nthrough their social media accounts. Although there are also
\nMedan and Bandung lecturers who only post motivations,
\nreligious lectures selfie photo and photos of their daily
\nactivities. Their reception of news of hoaxes and hate speech or
\ndiscourses spread by social media is in a dominant position, negotiated and oppositional readers
