Abstract
This chapter presents the results of systematic literature review on early warning system (EWS) interoperability and their data representations. It highlights the importance of the semantic approaches for the development of interoperable EWS, emphasizing the “semantic Internet of Things (IoT) EWS”. Semantic interoperability is crucial in these systems because it enables unambiguous data exchange, so that different data sources can be integrated with EWS'. The chapter also analyzes the main issues concerning the improvement of EWS interoperability, stressing the role of the Internet of Things in smart situation-aware emergency services. A fundamental aspect of interoperability is the mechanism to represent data. Numerous data representations have been proposed for crisis management, including lexicon standards and ontologies. The chapter concludes by proposing topics for follow-up research. The research aims to improve the semantic interoperability of IoT EWS for smart emergency services.
