Abstract

Knowledge representation and reasoning are critical components in engineering intelligent systems. In most intelligent applications, knowledge capture and representation play a vital role. Domain knowledge needs to be captured, processed, reused and communicated Ontology serves these purposes. Ontology is an organized means of representing the knowledge detailed to the domain of interest. The focus of this survey is to get a clear understanding of what Ontologies are, the process of building them and ways of using them in various domains. This survey covers the reported approaches to gather and represent knowledge using ontologies, their use in reasoning, the various applications in different domains, the tool support, and associated languages.
