Abstract

Blockchain Internet of Things (IoT) convergence in smart grids offers an innovative solution to improving demand response (DR) systems. This paper aims at analyzing interactive impacts of those technologies on grid efficiency, security, and transparency. The research also benefits from blockchain in that it enhances secure, immutable, and transparent recording of energy transaction data in a decentralized manner further protecting the system from risks associated with data or cyberattacks. Similarly, the smart IoT devices are capable of transmitting live data on power usage and general grid conditions, hence enabling effective and optimal grid management. MATLAB is used in the context of the study for simulations to illustrate benefits of blockchain and IoT integration concerning consumer energy usage, stability of the grid and other high-level demand-side management capabilities. These outcomes point to a tremendous potential of these technologies to solve the severe issue of the current integrated energy systems. The future research must therefore determine how these technologies can be scaled up for mass application, how integrated properly and the overall benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. This work joins the growing discourse on smart grid innovations to posits blockchain and IoT as having immense prospects in building a more sustainable, effective, and secure power future.
