This study followed the guidelines of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) to explain the concept of smart libraries in the context of equity and social justice in higher education, and to investigate the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the promotion of equal access to educational opportunities for students with disabilities in academic libraries. The findings of this systematic literature review present a robust overview of the role of smart technologies in fostering digital equity and social inclusion in academic libraries, revealing challenges to the integration of these technologies, and proposing actionable solutions for academic libraries.
