The paper presents some state-of-the-art aspects of micro-credentials design, problems related to their recognition with some examples of open and flexible learning tools developed in projects leaded by the author. Years after introduction of micro-credentials as one of European Union approaches in modernizing the education and training there are still many open issues and problems in understanding and implementing the micro-credential in many countries. Universities also need support in introducing the micro-credential approach in their educational programmes. Last but not least the nowadays modernization of education, including implementation of micro-credentials, is closely related to digitization of learning process and implementation of variety of online tools for open and distance learning. The paper also presents some tools and examples from projects related to the topic, showcasing some approaches for validation of formal, non-formal or informal learning using module-based design of learning content in line with micro-credential approach. One of the often-employed learning modules design includes learning outcomes approach.
