Elections are the cornerstone of democracy, enabling citizens to express their opinions and shape governance. However, traditional voting systems are often centralized, leading to potential security vulnerabilities. Blockchain technology, being decentralized and secure, offers a solution. A blockchain is a digital record that is distributed in chain of blocks, where every block holds data, a previous hash, and its own hash. Any change to a single block affects the entire chain, making tampering extremely difficult. These blocks are cryptographically linked, ensuring that data is continuously adapted and shared across a peer-to-peer network, where no single entity can alter the information. The blockchain’s immutability and transparency guarantee that voting data and application code remain unaltered, with each vote securely recorded and distributed across multiple nodes, enhancing security and resistance to attacks. Additionally, blockchain supports remote voting, increasing accessibility for those unable to vote in person. Estonia, a pioneer in adopting blockchain for government services, including e-voting, has seen significant growth in voter’s participation, with 44% of voters casting their ballots online in the 2019 parliamentary elections, a marked increase from previous general elections.
