Paper overview

Abstract

Neurosentics is an interdisciplinary theoretical framework that models consciousness as a regulatory information-processing system organized around three basic levels: fact, interpretation, and reaction. The central hypothesis is that a substantial proportion of chronic distress is amplified not directly by external events themselves, but by a persistent mismatch between verifiable data and the internal model of their meaning. In this view, suffering is treated not as an intrinsic property of consciousness, but as a structural consequence of interpretive excess—that is, situations in which interpretation acquires regulatory weight greater than the factual basis supporting it. On this foundation, the paper proposes: (1) an operational definition of consciousness as a system capable of distinguishing fact, interpretation, and reaction; (2) a minimal mathematical formalization of suffering, fear, awareness, clarity, and cognitive stability; (3) a neurobiological interpretation of the model through top-down control, limbic reactivity, neuroplasticity, stress load, curiosity-related learning, behavioral flexibility, and context-dependent social neuromodulation; (4) an extension of the model into empathy as a mode of social information processing; and (5) the concept of cognitive intropy as an increase in internal order through reduction of interpretive noise and improved discrimination between reality and its cognitive overlay. The paper does not claim to offer a complete theory of the brain or a universal account of all mental states. Instead, it proposes a mid-level formal architecture intended for experimental and computational development. Some components are directly grounded in existing literature on emotion regulation, appraisal, predictive processing, curiosity and memory, serotonin-related flexibility, oxytocin-related social cognition, and stress-related cognitive rigidity. Other components, including cognitive intropy and the distinction between reactive and regulated empathy, are advanced as theoretical extensions that require direct empirical validation.
