The Effect of Undergraduates' Perceived Parenting Styles of Parents on College Adjustment: The Mediating Effect of Career Adaptability Moderated by Critical Consciousness

Abstract
Objectives This study is to verify the mediating effect of career adjustment moderated by critical consciousness on the relationship between parenting style as perceived by Undergraduates and college adjustment. This study to help students adjust to college by identifying the influence of parents on undergraduates and verifying the relationship between various variables that affect career adaptability. Methods Questionnaire data from 332 students enrolled in six universities in the Seoul metropolitan area, set parenting style as an independent variable and college adjustment as a dependent variable, and analyzed the mediating effect of career adaptability moderated by critical consciousness. Results First, a complete mediation effect of career adaptability was found between parenting style and college adjustment. In addition, the subfactors of parenting style, and parents' psychological control, showed a negative complete mediation effect of career adjustment on college adaptability, and a positive complete mediation effect of parents' autonomy support. Second, the moderating effect of critical consciousness on the relationship between parenting style and career adaptability was confirmed. The results showed that the moderating effect of critical consciousness was significant. Third, the mediating effect of career adaptability moderated by critical consciousness on the correlation between parenting style and college adaptability was confirmed. Conclusions The results of this study confirmed that the mediating effect of career adjustment moderated by critical consciousness was significant. Finally, this study discusses the need to develop career training and counseling programs related to the results.
